CISP's work continues in the Saharawi Refugee Camps of southwest Algeria, employing a holistic approach that ranges from strengthening the education system to fostering economic innovation. Our organisation is actively pursuing practical initiatives to improve the quality of life and build a more resilient future for the Saharawi people.
EDUCATION AND LEARNING
As part of the recent "Inclusive Education, Hygiene, and Food Security" project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), we are actively working to ensure a dignified and inclusive learning environment for children and young people in the Camps.
Activities in the education sector include the refurbishment and upgrading of school classrooms and sanitary facilities, interventions aimed at creating safer, cleaner, and more welcoming spaces for all children.
Particular attention is being paid to inclusive education, with the aim of ensuring that every student has access to quality education and a healthy environment. Furthermore, CISP promotes innovative teaching methods and the training of specialised personnel to better support students with special educational needs.
CISP also acknowledges the crucial impact of early childhood on children's cognitive and social development. As a result, a significant part of our commitment involves supporting and strengthening nursery schools. These fundamental spaces guide children through their pre-school education, effectively preparing them for learning in primary school.
Recently, 25 social workers received training to identify, guide, and support vulnerable children. Concerning infrastructure, 12 nursery schools in the Wilayas (provinces) of Smara, Awserd, and Dakhla are currently being renovated, and 2 have already been fully rebuilt. These facilities will offer safe, inclusive, and suitable learning environments for over 3,000 children.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Alongside these educational efforts, we've also undertaken recent technical missions to the "Hussein Tamek" poultry centre. Our work there centres on economic development, specifically the introduction of a widespread egg distribution network and the Camps' first e-commerce system.
This project also places significant emphasis on enhancing local poultry and egg production and includes the groundbreaking introduction of an e-commerce system, the first of its kind in this region.
The overarching goal is to foster a stronger and more resilient community where economic opportunities and access to quality education are mutually supportive.
The recently signed agreement for the "Establishment of a distribution business and the employment framework for transporters" is a vital step towards structuring entrepreneurial ventures, providing new opportunities, especially for the youth.
