The project has the general objective of guaranteeing the protection of the right to well-being of children and adolescents in vulnerable situations by facilitating their social and educational integration. Saharawi civil society is very much alive and active: indeed, all the actors of the camps detect a very high level of resilience of the refugee population.
The activities proposed by this project were elaborated together with educators and representatives of the Students’ Parents Association of the five Wilaya (provinces), with particular attention to inclusion and to the conditions of disability and children’s special needs.
The project guarantees access to a safe learning environment, equipped with drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities for school-aged children.
This involves the partial reconstruction of two primary schools and the construction and equipment of an intermediate school as well as the rehabilitation of a college.
The project is also responsible for the creation of a handbook on school infrastructure construction standards aimed at strengthening local education authorities in the design and management of infrastructure adapted to the local context in order to ensure its rational use and sustainability.
The project contributes substantially to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 11, by improving the availability and access to safe water and reducing the environmental impact of waste management for 138,287 individuals residing in 15 villages in the Union of Municipalities of Jurd Al Kaytaa, Akkar, Lebanon. This will be achieved through the improvement of the water distribution networks, andsustainable water use practices, and the enhancement of Solid Waste Management system.
During the project lifetime, infrastructure works will be carried out including laying pipes, house connections to the water network, upgrade of water pumping station and connecting the water distribution system to the electricity network. Furthermore, the area will benefit from the organization and development of a standardized system for the collection and disposal of solid waste, and from the reclamation of an illegal landfill with reconversion of the area to a public green space.
